An Israel Defense Forces soldier was ordered to prison for 21 days after he yawned during a ceremony remembering slain former Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, Haaretz newspaper reported Wednesday.
The soldier, who was not identified, reportedly yawned loudly while the commander of the Ramat David Israel Air Force base was delivering a speech during last week’s memorial day for Rabin, who was assassinated in 1995.
The soldier’s concerned mother told Israel Radio that he yawned “without covering his mouth” because he was tired, not disrespectful, the paper reported. She added that he may deserve to be punished, but not this harshly.
The soldier was sentenced to 21 days in a military prison after a brief trial. An IDF spokesman told Haaretz that the soldier can request an appeal
