An armed 91-year-old Arizona man on oxygen and confined to a wheelchair surrendered Thursday after a six-hour standoff with police, The Arizona Republic reported.

Fremont M. Rodocker, of Sun City, Ariz., gave up peacefully after meeting with Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, according to the paper.

"Well, this is a strange situation," Arpaio told the paper after the standoff ended. "He was alert. I had a nice conversation with him. He seems to be depressed."

Rodocker, a retired Ohio factory worker, had threatened to shoot himself during the incident, which began at 3:30 a.m. on Thursday.
