WASHINGTON – With the country barely over its loss of the nation's favorite conservative president following his 10-year battle with Alzheimer's disease (search), his son, Ron, was appearing at the Democratic National Convention (search) to help undermine the current president's claim to President Reagan's legacy.
Ron Reagan is challenging the restrictions President Bush (search) has placed on harvesting new stem cells. Besides it being a wedge issue this election that Democrats hope to benefit from, party leaders are also pleased they got the famous son to speak at their show.
"President Bush has put significant restraints on seeing stem cell research move forward. And he is not allowing much federal dollars to be used for stem cell research," said Rhode Island Rep. Jim Langevin, who was paralyzed in a childhood gun accident and was introducing Reagan on Tuesday night.
But Dr. Leon Kass, who leads the President's Council on Bioethics (search), said those who think the administration isn't doing enough on stem cell research have got it all wrong.
"Over 400 shipments of stem cells have been shipped to researchers. There are another 3,500 shipments waiting for someone to simply say, 'Please send them to us.'"
