Radford University officials have put the campus on lockdown and asked students to seek shelter as police search for a man suspected of shooting someone near the campus.

The Virginia university announced the recommendation to stay locked indoors on its Web site.

Radford Police Chief Don Goodman says the shooting happened around 9 p.m. and that the victim hasn't been identified.

The suspect is described as a young black man, who is tall and slim, wearing a camouflaged jacket, possibly has a goatee beard and is considered armed and dangerous.

The university said in an e-mail that the suspect was seen near the school's Bonnie Hurlbert Student Center.
