A 15-year-old girl was struck and killed Friday by a school bus carrying students on their way to a suburban Providence high school, the police said.

The Warwick school superintendent said the girl, whose name has not been released, was wearing headphones when she was struck while crossing the street.

She apparently did not hear a car horn warning her of the collision, officials said.

The teen was hit around 7 a.m. as the bus turned left at an intersection near Pilgrim High School, where she was a student.

"She was a very, very good student," said Superintendent Peter Horoschak. "It's a tremendous loss."

Warwick police are still investigating, along with the state medical examiner's office.

A spokeswoman for the Ohio-based First Student bus company said the driver has been put on administrative leave. The driver's name has not been released.
