An Illinois grandmother masterminded a July acid attack on a woman in Chicago because she thought the victim was seeing her ex-husband, a prosecutor said in court Sunday.
Ofelia Garcia, 59, of Cicero, Ill., allegedly planned the assault with the cooperation of three juveniles, one of whom threw acid at Esperanza Medina, 48, prosecutor Karen Sullivan said according to a report by MyFOXChicago.com. Medina, a social worker, suffered third-degree burns on 25 percent of her body. Sullivan said she had multiple skin grafts and could lose sight in an eye.
Judge Laura Sullivan set Garcia's bail at $750,000 and at $250,000 for an alleged co-conspirator, MyFOXChicago.com said.
Sullivan said three youths, including two females, assaulted Medina with a bat and a bottle of acid while stealing her purse.
Garcia, who appeared in court via closed-circuit television, said in Spanish, "I really have nothing to do with this," MyFOXChicago.com said.
