According to Agence France-Presse, an envelope leaking a strange pinkish powder sparked an alert in a suburban Paris post office, but tests revealed the substance to be nothing more than desiccated elephant dung, police said.
With France on high terrorism alert following the London bombings last month, postal workers in a sorting center in the northwestern suburb of Bonneuil-en-France took no chances when they noticed the strange envelope from Sri Lanka with the powder inside.
After police were called in Thursday, six employees who had been exposed to the powder were subjected to medical examinations.
The powder was analyzed too, and was eventually found to contain the elephant excrement.
Police said the envelope was addressed to a Paris-based immigrant from Sri Lanka who apparently used the pachydermal poo for traditional religious rites.
Golf Outing Allegedly Involves Strippers
NAPERVILLE, Ill. (AP) — Police on Wednesday were investigating a golf outing sponsored by a gentleman's club in this Chicago suburb that allegedly featured women strippers in bikinis giving male golfers lap dances.
Residents who live along the Country Lakes Golf Club's course said they were surprised to see scantily clad women dancing and performing on the course. One resident called police to complain and videotaped some of the event from her back window.
"It's not something you'd expect in a family-oriented town like Naperville," said Geoff Pacana, who lives near the 16th hole. "It's certainly not something you'd want any of the kids who live around here to see."
Monday's golf outing was sponsored by Blackjack's Gentleman's Club located near South Elgin.
Naperville Police Chief David Dial said the investigation was focusing on "whether there was a criminal act or whether there was a liquor license violation."
He said anyone who participated in the event was subject to the investigation.
Messages left Wednesday at Country Lakes Golf Club and Blackjack's Gentleman's Club were not immediately returned.
Naperville Police Sgt. Joel Truemper said Wednesday the department was in the process of requesting a subpoena from a grand jury to review videotape from WLS-TV in Chicago.
Janet Hundley, WLS-TV's assistant news director, said the station has a policy of not handing over videotapes to authorities without a subpoena.
As of Wednesday evening, the station had not received a subpoena, she said.
Cops: Man Feigns Murder to Make Wife Leave
OCALA, Fla. (AP) — A man made up a story about killing a hitchhiker and burying the body in the woods in an effort to persuade his wife to leave him, authorities said.
Teddy Claire Akin, 28, of Ocala, was charged Tuesday with making a false report and petit theft. He was being held without bail.
Akin's wife, Felicia, called the Marion County Sheriff's Office Monday to report that her husband had told her that he killed a hitchhiker, authorities said.
Akin told investigators he had picked up the hitchhiker, who wanted a ride to Tampa. He said he hit the man in the neck, causing him to gasp and make a gurgling sound, when the two got into an argument over how far Akin would drive him, authorities said.
Akin said he dumped the body in a forest near a gun range and kept the man's wallet, which contained the license of Utah resident Dennis Legrande Allen, authorities said.
Deputies searching the area Akin described with dogs and an air unit failed to find a body Monday evening, Capt. Thomas Bibb said.
Akin eventually told investigators that he was going through a divorce and had hoped the murder story would make his wife leave him, said Sue Livoti, a sheriff's office spokeswoman.
"It seems he wanted to get a little attention and sympathy from his wife," Bibb said.
Akin told investigators he found the wallet on top of a newspaper stand. Investigators reached Allen in Utah by phone; Allen said he did not know Akin.
The sheriff's office would probably bill Akin for the cost of their seven-hour search, Bibb said.
"This was something that cost us a lot of time and energy," Bibb said.
A message left early Wednesday at the county public defender's office was not immediately returned.
Woman Who Tried to Open Plane Door Arrested
SEATTLE (AP) — A woman was arrested Wednesday for attempting to open an airplane exit door while the plane was still in the air, police said.
The 52-year-old woman from Dania Beach, Fla., left her seat and tried to open the door as the United Airlines flight was descending into Seattle to land, police said. The plane was at an altitude of about 4,000 feet at the time.
She failed but "did manage to turn the handle far enough that a warning light went on in the cockpit," Seattle-Tacoma International Airport spokesman Bob Parker told KING-TV.
A flight attendant persuaded the woman to sit back down, but nobody physically restrained her. Parker said the other passengers stayed belted in their seats in case she did manage to open the door.
The woman was arrested for investigation of malicious mischief when the plane landed. Police were investigating whether alcohol and prescription medication were involved.
A United spokesman did not immediately return a call for comment late Wednesday.
Naked Swordsman Pleads Guilty to Assault
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A man who chased his neighbors with a 2-foot sword while naked last winter pleaded guilty to a charge of assault with a dangerous weapon.
Curtis Rarick, 45, of North Liberty, could face up to two years in prison and a $5,000 fine at sentencing on Sept. 16. As part of a plea bargain, a charge of public intoxication was dismissed.
Police say they responded to a reported altercation on Feb. 27.
Rarick's neighbors told police he was standing naked in his front yard.
He got upset when they told him to put clothes on, dashed back in his house and came out with a sword. He then chased and threatened them, they told police.
Police said Rarick had a blood alcohol content of 0.12 percent.
