Poll: Sorry Sweetheart, I Prefer Lotto

This Valentine’s Day, lines may be longer at the lotto ticket counter than at the greeting card store, as more people say they would rather win the lottery than fall in love.

By 59 percent to 41 percent it’s money over love for Americans, according to the most recent FOX News poll conducted by Opinion Dynamics Corporation (results are based only on those making a choice).

It might surprise some that women are more likely than men to choose the lottery over love. Almost two-thirds of women (63 percent) say they would prefer the lotto windfall than love (37 percent), while 53 percent of men pick the money over love (47 percent).

Young people are much more conflicted in their decision than are older Americans. Those 18-34 years old split evenly between lotto and love, and the same holds true for those ages 35-50. But those over 50 years old are more inclined to take the cash (63 percent of 51-70 year olds say lottery as do fully 78 percent of those over 70 years).

Finally, Democrats are twice as likely to say they would prefer to win the lottery as fall in love (66 percent to 34 percent), while Republicans split almost evenly (51 percent lotto vs. 49 percent love).

Polling was conducted by telephone January 29-30 in the evenings. The sample is 900 registered voters nationwide with a margin of error of ± 3 percentage points. Results are based on only the 609 respondents making a choice (±4 percentage points).
