Gunmen killed a Polish (search) and an Algerian (search) journalist in a drive-by shooting south of Baghdad on Friday, police said.

A second Pole was wounded in the shooting in Mahmoudiyah (search), about 20 miles south of Baghdad, said police Lt. Alaa Hussein. Hussein said the journalists worked for a Polish television station but had no additional information.

Lt. Col. Robert Strzelecki, spokesman for the Polish-led force in southern Iraq, confirmed that two journalists belonging to a three-man television crew from Poland were killed.

He said the two died after their car drove over a bomb and gunmen opened fire on the vehicle.

In Warsaw, Andrzej Siwek, spokesman for Poland's TVP, said he could not confirm that the network's employees had been killed but "everything indicates that this unfortunately might be true."
