KARACHI, Pakistan – An unmanned U.S. spy plane crashed Sunday near an air base used by American forces in southern Pakistan (search), police said.
Villagers saw the small plane go down in a field about three miles from the Pakistani air force base in the town of Jacobabad, about 180 miles east of the Afghan border.
"We collected the debris of the 3-foot plane and handed it over to Pakistani officials at the base," said Jacobabad police superintendent Masroor Jatoi (search).
U.S. officials were not available for comment.
At least six of the American Predator (search) spy planes have crashed near Jacobabad since October 2001, when American forces began using the base there to back their anti-terror campaign in neighboring Afghanistan.
