A 19-year-old Las Vegas-area woman has been arrested on allegations that she hid her pregnancy and then killed her newborn son because she was afraid her mother would be mad at her for giving birth out of wedlock.

Henderson police spokesman Keith Paul says Carmela Camero was booked into jail Wednesday on suspicion of murder.

Authorities say she called a hospital Monday and said she delivered a baby and that it stopped breathing. Police and paramedics who arrived at the home found the newborn dead.

Police allege Camero hid the pregnancy, delivered the child by herself at her home Sunday and then suffocated him.

An arrest report says Camero told investigators she smothered the baby because she was afraid her mother would throw her out of the house.

Henderson Justice Court records do not list an attorney for Camero, and she declined a request for comment Thursday at the Henderson Detention Center. Camero is being held without bail.
