Brazilian police say a newspaper owner stabbed a former mayor in a dispate over articles allegedly criticizing the politician.

Authorities say Jose Muraro knifed former Chapada dos Guimaraes Mayor Sebastiao Moreira da Silva in a bar Sunday.

Police officer Miguel de Almeida says that the altercation began after Silva lunged at Muraro because he was angry about the bad press he said he was getting in the weekly newspaper Pluriverso Chapadense.

Almeida said Wednesday that Muraro pulled out a knife and stabbed Silva in the stomach.

He said Silva's injuries are not life-threatening. Muraro is claiming self-defense. He has not been charged and was released from custody while police investigate
