Police surrounded a house two blocks from a California school Thursday after residents reported seeing a mountain lion that may have taken shelter under the home.

Wildlife officials set up baited cages and had tranquilizer guns ready to capture and sedate the animal, police Lt. Tom Fenner said.

Teachers at the school were told not to let children out for recess, and residents in the neighborhood 30 miles east of San Francisco were urged to stay indoors.

In recent weeks, several mountain lion sightings have been reported in the area.
