LITTLE ROCK – Police say at least two high school students were shot and five others injured in a melee at a park in midtown Little Rock on Tuesday.
Officer Cassandra Davis said at least two of the victims suffered gunshot wounds in the fight, which broke out around 3:15 p.m. Tuesday at Boyle Park. Davis said another student had a foot run over by a car and another appeared to have been punched in the face with brass knuckles.
Davis said officers did not know what started the fight between the students from J.A. Fair and Hall high schools in Little Rock.
"There was a large group of young people in the park," Davis said. "One parent was at the park to pick up her child. When she got there, the group began to scatter and drive off."
Davis said the mother had her car blocked in by another car filled with teens. Those students broke out the windows of her car with a baseball bat.
Davis said officers pulled over a car with several youths inside immediately after the fight. Davis said police suspect at least two handguns were used in the shootings.
About 20 students were at the Little Rock police headquarters downtown Tuesday night, waiting to be questioned by detectives, Davis said.
