Five people were killed on Wednesday in a crash in heavy rain on Interstate 65 in south-central Kentucky, state police said.

Trooper Todd Holder said a tractor-trailer, a pickup truck and a van crashed in the southbound lanes at the 61 mile marker in Hart County at about 7:30 CST Wednesday morning. Holder says three people in the pickup were killed, and two people in the van were killed.

The southbound lanes of the interstate are shut down at the site of the crash about 75 miles south of Louisville.

Holder says police are on the scene investigating how the accident happened.
