Police say a middle-school principal struck a high school student with her SUV at a crosswalk near Philadelphia, but didn't identify herself as the driver until dialing 911 later.

Pennridge Regional Police Chief David Mettin says the 15-year-old Pennridge High School student suffered head injuries and is in critical condition.

The chief says 66-year-old Margaret Kantes struck the student, stopped and stayed with emergency crews near the scene in Perkasie. Mettin says the principal didn't say she was the driver. She left and called police to identify herself 50 minutes after the accident.

Messages left with school district officials and at Kantes' home in Doylestown, about 25 miles north of Philadelphia, were not immediately returned.
