A police official says 10 people have been killed after two ferries collided, sinking one in eastern Bangladesh.

Local police chief Lehajuddin said the accident occurred Sunday in Brahmanbaria district's Titas River when a ferry carrying about 50 passengers collided with another vessel.

Most of the passengers swam to shore safely but 10 women and children died, he said.

Brahmanbaria is 50 miles east of the capital, Dhaka.
