TONY SNOW, HOST:  Today is my best Father's Day ever because I'm still a father.  I say "still," because I almost lost the privilege Tuesday night.  As my wife, kids and in-laws slept, a fire broke out in our home.  Fortunately, God was watching over us, because if even one of a dozen or more factors had been different we would have died.  But we got out safely along with our three dogs, two cats and guinea pig. And since then, friends and colleagues have showered us with countless kindnesses.

The ordeal has reminded me that Father's Day, like fatherhood, is about a whole lot more than dads.  It's about wives, who, with their husbands, can show kids how love and commitment work.  It's about friends who help guys sort through everything from dinner table etiquette to the perils of raising daughters.  And it's about kids who always refresh our
senses of wonder.

I've never loved my wife more than I do now because nobody I know bears hardship with as much grace or strength.  And I've never been more proud of my kids.  When I yelled for everyone to get out of the house, our eight-year-old woke from a heavy sleep, sprinted downstairs and out the door and stood by a tree where we've always told her to wait in the event of a fire.

She, her brother, and sister also have drawn the right conclusions from the ordeal, which is that they ought to be as kind to others as they've been to us.

We don't have a house right now, but we're far from homeless.  We've got family, we've got friends, we've got neighbors, and we have each other.  And I'll tell you what, it just doesn't get any better than that.

That's it for today.  Have a great Father's Day, have a great week.  And remember to start your Sundays right here on Fox News Sunday.
