PANAMA CITY, Panama – About 2,000 people marched through Panama City on Tuesday to commemorate the hundreds of people who died when the United States invaded the Central American country 16 years ago to overthrow dictator Manuel Noriega.
The demonstrators shouted anti-American slogans and carried placards with messages such as "December 20 shall never be forgotten."
No violent incidents or arrests were reported.
The U.S. invasion of Panama on Dec. 20, 1989, ended Noriega's oppressive rule, but many Panamanians complain about the cost in lives and national dignity. Noriega is imprisoned in the United States, serving a 40-year drug sentence.
