A Palestinian militant was killed in an overnight explosion at the entrance to a West Bank refugee camp, Palestinian security officials and local residents said Sunday.

Khaled Diab, 22, a member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine was killed just before midnight on Saturday at the refugee camp in the town of Tulkarem, said one of the officials, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Diab probably intended to use the bomb against an Israeli target, but it apparently went off prematurely, one of the officials said.

There was no immediate comment from the PFLP, which is opposed to peace with Israel and to the agreements signed by Yasser Arafat with the Israelis.

Like other militant groups, the PFLP sometimes plants a bomb at the entrance to a refugee camp with the aim of detonating the charge when an Israeli tank or other military vehicle is entering.
