SALEM, Ore. – A state task force is calling for spending $3.5 million to restore daily physical education in Oregon schools to combat alarming rates of obesity.
The task force also says another $10 million should be spent on statewide education and prevention efforts aimed at overweight Oregonians of all ages.
A report issued by the task force says that six in 10 Oregon adults, and one in five Oregon children, are overweight or obese.
It says that treating obesity-related diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and stroke costs Oregon nearly $800 million a year.
