The Oregon State Hospital's "J" building, made famous in the 1975 Jack Nicholson film, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, was opened for a weekend tour to visitors who loved the look inside but often wondered how the patients could have lived there.

State employees guided about 200 people through vacated, decaying sections of the building and the sprawling tunnels under it, where some patients had to live.

At least 600 more people have said they would like the tour but it is not certain that the Department of Human Services will be providing another chance because of a lack of available state staff.

The movie was based on a book by the late Oregon writer Ken Kesey. Most of the historic J Building will be demolished when a new facility is built.
