In July 2007, Kayla Roden's life changed. The high school soccer player suffered a paralyzing injury while trying to do a "cartwheel" kick during a game with friends, cbs3.com reported Sunday.
While trying to kick the ball with her legs over her head, the Minnesota teen's arms gave out, she fell to the ground and broke her neck.
Roden was told she would not walk again, according to the report. But after a series of surgeries, she regained the ability to move the toes on her right foot. Three days later, she was back on her feet.
"It's just unbelievable," said Roden's mother Marita. "I know she knows it's a miracle, but as her parents you just thank God every day."
Roden will never be able to play soccer again, but jumped at the chance to run 10 miles in the Twin Cities Marathon Sunday when asked to do so by a friend.
“It is crazy that I am going to be able to do this. It wouldn't have meant much to me before, but now it is going to mean the world," Roden said.
