Forensic investigators say a skeleton found by someone working in a Warwick basement is hundreds of years old.

Warwick Police Captain Michael Babula said Monday that the state medical examiner and an archaeologist believe the skeletal remains date from as early as the colonial era. He says it's difficult to tell many basic details about the remains, such as whether they belonged to an adult or child.

The skeleton was discovered Saturday when a worker apparently broke through a basement and into an old burial site that predates the home. Police investigated the case as a precaution until the remains were dated.
