WARSAW, Poland – An express train with a drunk driver derailed in southwestern Poland early Tuesday, injuring two passengers, officials said.
The overnight train was traveling from Krakow to the Baltic Sea resort of Swinoujscie with more than 200 passengers when it derailed Tuesday morning near Wroclaw, said police spokesman Krzysztof Zaporowski.
Authorities found the train's driver hiding in a nearby forest. A breathalyzer test showed he had an alcohol level far above Poland's legal limit for operating motor vehicles, authorities said.
Zaporowski said the 42-year-old man was "completely drunk."
Michal Wrzosek, a spokesman for the Polish railway, said the train likely derailed because it was going too fast for that section of track.
Passengers told TVN24 television that the train began rocking before it came off the tracks.
Wrzosek said all drivers of Polish express trains will now have to pass daily breathalyzer tests before starting work.
Police took the driver into custody. Prosecutors have opened an investigation and say the driver will likely be charged with causing the accident.
If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison.
