Office of Management and Budget Director Mitch Daniels

On January 23, 2001, the United States Senate confirmed Mitchell E. Daniels, Jr. as the Director of the Office of Management and Budget. As Director of OMB, Daniels will help oversee the preparation of the Federal budget and supervise its administration in Executive Branch agencies.

Prior to joining the administration, Daniels served as the senior vice president of corporate strategy and policy for the Eli Lilly and Company. In this capacity, Daniels was responsible for overseeing corporate strategic decision making, merger and acquisition activities, and corporate affairs on a global basis. Previously, Daniels served as the company’s president of North American pharmaceutical operations.

Daniels was named president and chief executive officer of the Hudson Institute in 1987.  In the Reagan Administration, Daniels served as an Assistant to the President and as the administration’s liaison to the nation’s state and local officials.

Under the chairmanship of Sen. Richard Lugar, Daniels served as executive director of the National Republican Senatorial Committee from 1983 to 1984.  He also served Lugar between 1971-1982, in various capacities, first when Lugar was Indianapolis mayor and later when he became a Senator. 

Daniels has a bachelor’s degree from Princeton University and a law degree from Georgetown University.  He and his wife, Cheri, have four daughters.
