A University of Notre Dame student was shot in the arm when she mistakenly tried to enter a neighbor's home after coming home from a bar, South Bend police said.

Police and university officials declined to identify the 23-year-old woman, but confirmed that she was a student. Police say the woman's injuries are not life-threatening.

Police say the woman was returning to her home about a half-mile south of campus about 3:30 a.m. Tuesday when she mistakenly tried to enter the house next door.

The resident of the home says he heard someone pounding on the door, yelled at the person to go away, then fired one shot through the door.

Police say prosecutors will determine whether any charges will be filed in the case.
