North Korea Agrees to Oil, Equipment Aid in Nuclear Disarmament Deal

PANMUNJOM, Korea – North Korea agreed Tuesday to accept half of the economic aid it has been promised for disabling its nuclear reactor in energy-related equipment and other items, a South Korean official said.

The North has been promised 1 million tons of oil for disabling the facility that produces plutonium for bombs, and will still be given about 450,000 tons in fuel oil, South Korea's deputy nuclear envoy Lim Sung-nam said.

The agreement came at the end of two days of six-nation talks aimed at discussing details of a February deal that calls for the North to disable its Yongbyon reactor, which it has pledged to do by the end of the year.
