No Deals for Mullah Omar...

No deals for Omar, more scrutiny for Sami Al-Arian.  That's the subject of this evening's Talking Points memo.

Mullah Omar is on the run, and some Afghans want to give him amnesty.  No way that will happen.  Omar is a war criminal.  He must be tried by the United States.  This is not negotiable.  The Afghans have to understand that 4,000 American civilians are dead, and anyone, anyone involved in that slaughter will answer to the U.S.A.

Omar the holy warrior is now running for his life, trying everything to save himself.  That should be a lesson to any Muslim fanatics who think that they're going to heaven if they kill people.  If Omar was so convinced he was going to heaven, he wouldn't be so desperately trying to save his butt.  Same thing goes for bin Laden, who's crawling around in caves trying to avoid capture.

Back home, the disturbing story of Professor Sami Al-Arian is still in limbo.  After appearing on The Factor a few months ago, he was suspended with pay by the University of South Florida near Tampa.  The problem with the professor is this:  He may have raised money for terrorist organizations while working at USF.  There is no question that he brought the current leader of the Islamic Jihad to that university, and the guy actually lectured there.

The state of Florida should be investigating Professor Al-Arian.  For months we have been calling Governor Jeb Bush's office to try to find out if Florida authorities are doing anything in the case.  The governor has rightly pointed out that he by law cannot fire Al-Arian, but surely Florida law enforcement authorities can investigate the man.  Is that being done?

We don't know.  Governor Bush's spokesperson, Elizabeth Hurst, told us today she would not confirm whether investigation is under way.  The governor's office also says that the Florida Department of Law Enforcement does not report to the governor.

Well, here's my feeling about this.  If I were the governor of Florida, the chief law enforcement officer of that state, I would see to it that Professor Al-Arian is investigated, and I would tell the good people of Florida, the taxpayers, what was happening.  That's called open government.  We hope Governor Bush will do that.

The time of pussyfooting around with people like Omar and Sami is obviously gone.  Americans need protection from terrorists, and the government should be aggressive in providing that protection.  No deals for Omar, close scrutiny for Sami.
