SAN FRANCISCO – A container ship traveling through dense fog bumped into a tower supporting the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge Wednesday, but appeared to have caused no damage to the span, officials said.
The ship, which was heading outbound from Oakland, struck a tower west of Yerba Buena Island at about 8:30 a.m. The vessel reported damage to its front left side and fuel was leaking, according to a statement from the U.S. Coast Guard, which responded to the incident.
The ship is now anchored north of Treasure Island, outside the channel. The Coast Guard and San Francisco Police Department are enforcing a 100 foot safety zone around the ship and fuel in the water. The California Department of Transportation is assessing the bridge.
Coast Guard pollution and marine inspectors also are conducting investigations into the amount of bulk fuel spilled.
Traffic on the bridge has not been affected, authorities said.
