Two major pharmacies in New York have agreed to translate prescription drug instructions to customers' primary languages in more than 2,000 stores statewide.
In agreements with the state Attorney General's Office, the chains CVS and Rite-Aid, which also owns Eckerd and Genovese pharmacies, say they will counsel and provide written translations in Spanish, Chinese, Italian, Russian, French and Polish, languages spoken by more than 1 percent of New York's population.
CVS says it provides telephone language interpretation for more than 150 languages to assist pharmacists and will now include warning labels, directions for medication use and other reference materials in the six languages.
A call to Rite-Aid was not immediately returned.
