NEW YORK – Hundreds of Roman Catholic lay teachers have gone on strike after failing to reach a settlement with the Archdiocese of New York.
The Lay Faculty Association represents 450 teachers at 10 schools in New York City and its northern suburbs. Teachers began gathering Tuesday morning at John F. Kennedy Catholic High School in suburban Somers and at other schools, an association spokesman said.
Spokesman Henry Kielkucki said the strike is not intended to have any affect on the pope's visit to New York later this week.
The archdiocese and faculty have argued over wages, health care and pensions.
Last week the archdiocese announced a larger union had agreed to a four-year contract.
A spokesman for the archdiocese did not return a call seeking comment on the strike.
