ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Two traffic stops in different parts of New Mexico have turned up more than a quarter of a million dollars in cash.
State motor transportation officers stopped a car on Interstate 25 near Raton in the northeast corner of the state just south of the Colorado state line on Monday for following another vehicle too close. The officers searched the car and found 20 bundles of cash totaling just over $199,000.
The driver and passenger were from Utah.
State police officers stopped a BMW on Interstate 40 west of Albuquerque in central New Mexico over the weekend because one of the passengers in the car wasn't wearing a seat belt. The officers searched the car and found just over $122,000.
The driver and passengers were from the Chicago area.
The Drug Enforcement Administration has taken over the cases.
