Police used tear gas to end a lengthy standoff with an armed man at a northern New Jersey home.

The 50-year-old man was taken from the Ho-Ho-Kus residence on a stretcher at about 4:15 p.m. Friday, but it was not immediately clear whether he had been injured. His name was not released.

He surrendered shortly after police fired four canisters of tear gas into the house.

Officers first responded to the home around 9 a.m., after the man's girlfriend called police and said he had two guns and was depressed.

Officers talked with him by telephone, but he refused to surrender and was seen walking around the home with a weapon.

A nearby elementary school in the Bergen County town about 20 miles northwest of New York City was placed on lockdown as a precaution.
