A breakthrough insulin pump designed to mimic the human pancreas is being introduced for diabetics in the United Kingdom.

The pump — called the Paradigm Veo — automatically stops the flow of insulin to the body if blood sugar levels fall too low.

It is designed to help prevent hypoglycemic attacks, which can leave diabetics in a coma.

"This latest technology is a significant breakthrough which will help people with diabetes to control their condition,” said Peter Hammond, a consultant at Harrogate District Hospital in England. "Paradigm Veo alerts the patient if their glucose levels drop too low, and stops them getting more insulin if they don't respond to the alert.”

The pump is only suitable for people with Type 1 diabetes, which usually develops in childhood. This is different from Type 2 diabetes, which is linked to obesity and unhealthy lifestyles.
