KABUL, Afghanistan – A NATO airstrike hit a house during a battle between Western troops and militants, killing nine "innocent" Afghans living there, an Afghan official said Monday.
Militants overnight fired on a NATO base in Kapisa province, just north of Kabul, said Sayad Mohammad Dawood Hashimmi, Kapisa deputy governor.

When soldiers returned fire, an airstrike hit a civilian home, killing a man, three boys and five women, Hashimmi said.
Maj. William Mitchell, a U.S. military spokesman, said officials were looking into the incident.
