The Golden Globes, Narc, Kangaroo Jack, A Guy Thing and National Security in The Foxlight.

Don't believe the hype. Sorry Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman and Julianne Moore, The Hours was one of the worst movies of the year. Time magazine gave it that dubious distinction. And by the way, at around 1 hour and 50 minutes, it's also mis-titled.

Everybody is trying really, really hard. And it may fool a few people at the Golden Globes this weekend. But as one journalist put it, you may want to join Nicole Kidman when she walks into the water to drown herself. And by the way, before you start groaning that I gave something away -- it happens during the opening credits.

Spend your money on Ray Liotta and Jason Patric in Narc -- it's one of the best movies last year. And here's a prediction: No matter what this thing does in theaters, I think it will become a cult DVD that gets played over and over just like Michael Mann's De Niro/Pacino crime thriller, Heat.

The rest of the new offerings this weekend look pretty much like what you'd expect in January when Hollywood runs it's "clearance sales." Hop away from Kangaroo Jack according to most critics.

A Guy Thing looks like a "cable thing." And National Security with Martin Lawrence? Remember the last time he had a gun? This is less serious but just as baffling.
