BISMARCK, N.D. – North Dakota lawmakers say a pregnant girl should be able to seek medical care without a parent's consent.
The state Senate voted overwhelming to change the law that now bars a physician from treating a pregnant girl younger than 18 unless her parent or guardian gives approval.
Lehr Sen. Robert Erbele says the bill is important for the health of unborn children. He says it will help give the mother and her baby a good start.
The bill would allow for health care workers to contact parents in certain cases, but only after discussing it with the teenager. West Fargo Sen. Judy Lee says doctors are willing to help teens communicate with their parents.
The bill passed by a 40-6 vote. It now goes to the House for consideration.
