A 21-year-old mother of two small children has been found alive in the wreckage of her pickup truck in western North Carolina five days after she left work and told her husband she was headed home.

Authorities said Amber Pennell was found Monday night in the wreck in a ravine off U.S. 321. The Lenoir News-Topic reported the truck was found in a 100-foot-deep ravine in trees that were covered with kudzu vines.

Pennell left work at a barbecue restaurant in Lenoir about 10 p.m. Wednesday and called her husband.

Caldwell County Emergency Services Director Tommy Courtner said workers used ropes to lower themselves into the ravine and worked 30 to 45 minutes to cut her free.

Officials said she was treated for a broken leg, trauma, dehydration and mild hypothermia.
