LONDON – Who cares about Prince Charles' (search) second marriage?
Fewer and fewer, according to a poll published Wednesday by The Times newspaper.
Some 69 percent of the respondents to a Populus poll said they neither approved nor disapproved of Charles' marriage to the former Camilla Parker Bowles (search). Ten percent of men and 17 percent of women disapproved, compared to 20 percent of men and 27 percent of women who approved.
Enthusiasm for the marriage has waned since it was announced in February. At that time, The Times' poll found that 43 percent of its sample approved compared with 22 percent who approved. Only 30 percent didn't care in February.
The Times' poll also found that 39 percent wanted Charles' elder son, Prince William (search), as the next monarch, compared to 31 percent who backed Charles.
That largely reflected women's hostility to Charles, with 48 percent wanting William compared to 26 percent for Charles. Men preferred Charles by 36 percent to 30 percent.
Eighteen percent of the sample wanted to the monarchy abolished after Queen Elizabeth II dies.
The poll, based on 716 telephone interviews on April 24-25, had a margin of error of about four percentage points.
