The Moroccan Interior Ministry says police have arrested five Islamist extremists who were plotting terror attacks.

It says the suspects planned to rob banks to raise cash for weapons. It describes them as adherents to a radical strain of Islam that believes in spreading religion through violence.

The ministry also says Friday that a number of other people suspected of terrorism have been "neutralized" in various Morocco cities.

Officials did not specify when the arrests took place or how many were detained.

The head of an organization that provides help to Islamist detainees says he heard reports of five people disappearing last week, and says such disappearances have become common.
