ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Alaska Wildlife Troopers say they're seeking suspects from the villages of Point Hope and Kivalina who left more than 100 caribou to rot on the tundra after slaughtering them.
Investigators said they found 120 carcasses east of the Inupiat community of Point Hope. Half of them had been partly wasted or left untouched.
A trooper spokeswoman, Beth Ipsen, said officers are calling it "by far the worst case of blatant waste" they have ever seen.
Troopers said they've identified five suspects from the villages and think there could be many more.
They said the investigation has been slowed by an apparent lack of cooperation from village officials.
Calls to the city offices of Point Hope and Kivalina early Tuesday weren't immediately returned.
