An executive from Asia Television has admitted that the channel had falsified a viewer poll in a recent beauty contest, the London Times reports.

Hong Kong student Eunis Yao, 23, was declared the winner of the "Miss Asia" pageant after votes were counted from text messages and the Internet.

"This is an unacceptable issue of trust ... the number of votes shown on TV was wrong," Linus Cheung, executive chairman of ATV said.

It is rumored that Yao's Hong Kong background may be the reason she took the title, as the two runner-ups were Taiwanese and Canadian.

Cheung says an independent inquiry will be made to see who the true winner is.
