Sen. John McCain says he hopes Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano is quickly confirmed as Homeland Security Secretary by the U.S. Senate if she is formally nominated.

The Arizona senator and former Republican presidential candidate issued a statement on Thursday commending Napolitano's emergence as president-elect Barack Obama's primary choice for the cabinet post. He says he called and congratulated the Democratic governor.

He said Napolitano's experience as the former U.S. attorney for Arizona, Arizona's attorney general and as governor warranted her rapid confirmation by the Senate. He vowed to work closely with her through the process.
