BALTIMORE – A Baltimore man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison after fatally shooting a woman he had unprotected sex with before he wrongly accused her of having HIV.
Prosecutors say 25-year-old Brandon Chambers was sentenced Thursday to life with all but 25 years suspended for killing 26-year-old Shanika Pretlow in October 2005.
Charging documents state Chambers had unprotected sex with Pretlow, and after a friend told him she had "the bug," slang for HIV, Chambers said Pretlow would die before he did.
The statement of facts says witnesses told police Chambers was seen leaving a bar with Pretlow on the day of her death and that he later bragged that he "had to kill her."
Prosecutors say an autopsy showed Pretlow, who had four daughters, did not have HIV.
