WASHINGTON – Former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner raised more than $1 million for his 2008 U.S. Senate campaign in two and a half weeks.
Campaign finance reports Warner's campaign has filed with the Federal Election Commission show that from Sept. 13, when Warner announced his candidacy, to September 30th, he raised $1.1 million.
The popular Democrat spent about $92,000 over the same period establishing his campaign committee and had $1 million on hand at the start of October.
Warner is running for Republican Sen. John Warner's seat, giving Democrats an opportunity to hold both of the state's U.S. Senate seats in the GOP-leaning state for the first time since 1970. The men are not related.
Warner's senior adviser Monica Dixon said slightly more than 1,100 donors contributed in the first 17 days to Warner's campaign. Only $4,600 of the total came from Warner's own personal fortune estimated at more than $200 million.
