Authorities say a man who barricaded himself in a Southern California motel room has been charged with fatally shooting his wife in Kansas.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Rick Pedroza says 53-year-old Franklin L. Grammer was hospitalized in critical but stable condition Friday, recovering from a drug overdose and a bite from a police dog after an eight-hour standoff at a motel in Gorman.

Police had said Grammer shot himself but now say the puncture wound they thought was a bullet hole was actually a dog bite.

Grammer is charged with first-degree murder in the slaying of his wife, Betty Grammer. She was found shot in the head Monday outside a house she was painting in Fairway, Kan.
