Honolulu police say a man accused of trying to fatally shoot his terminally ill wife in her hospital bed has apparently committed suicide by hanging himself.

Officials say 71-year-old Robert Yagi was found dead Sunday in his Kailua home.

Yagi was free on bail after being charged last week with second-degree attempted murder in the Tuesday night shooting at Castle Medical Center.

Court documents say Yagi may have wanted to end the life of 71-year-old Leatrice Yagi because she's suffering from a terminal illness.

Officer Kaimi Kellett says in an affidavit that he believed Yagi planned to commit suicide after killing his wife.

Leatrice Yagi suffered only minor injuries when she was wounded with a shotgun round fired from a flare gun.
