BARNSTABLE, Mass. – The lawyer for a 23-year-old man accused of writing $4,000 in bogus checks at a Cape Cod nightclub says his client never claimed he was an Iraq war veteran.
Christopher Proe was ordered held on $15,000 bail following his arraignment on larceny charges in Barnstable District Court.
Management at Pufferbellies Entertainment Complex says Proe was allowed to write personal checks over five nights in August after telling staff he wanted to celebrate his safe return from Iraq.
Pufferbellies' general manager Mike Travers says Proe took advantage of the club's policy of giving VIP treatment to military personnel.
Defense Attorney Christie Peterson says Proe never claimed to have fought in the war and that the bad checks resulted in a mix-up in his bank account.
Police say Proe is wanted in three other states, including Indiana, where he's accused of failing to register as a sex offender.
