Lockerbie bomber Abdel Baset al-Megrahi's health is deteriorating, according to a Libyan hospital source.

SLIDESHOW: Lockerbie Bomber Abdel Baset al-Megrahi

Megrahi was sentenced to life imprisonment for the 1988 bombing of a Pan Am passenger jet, which claimed the lives of 270 people.

The Libyan was controversially released from jail in August on compassionate grounds after being diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer.

Now Tripoli Medical Center has released a statement saying Megrahi's condition has worsened and the cancer has spread throughout his body.

The 57-year-old arrived at the hospital on Saturday coughing and vomiting, the statement said.

"A scan has shown a worsening of the disease which has spread more than before," it added.
